This month's featured waymarker was one of those guys who were early to the waymarking scene. He actively geocaches and
waymarks, specializing in historic and building categories. Read on and learn more about this New York waymarker.
Home Waymarking area: Buffalo and Niagara Falls, NY and frequently Disney World
What does your username mean: Since my name is Ray, my friends throughout
high school and college always called my Rayman, so I went with it.
Favorite category: U.S. National Register of Historic Places, New York
Historical Markers, American Guide Series, and Frank Lloyd Wright Designed
Buildings.
Least favorite category: Payphones and any category where waymarks move
(Kissmobile Sightings, Art Cars, etc.)
Favorite waymark you've ever posted: I'd probably have to go with my
rotosphere (WM3CMM) I found while on vacation to Disney
World. I had a hard time finding a hotel room and ended up staying in
Lakeland, which is pretty far away from where I normally stay. I was on the
way back to the hotel from watching a spring training baseball game and
caught it out of the corner of my eye. So I swerved across two lanes of
traffic to make the turn into the parking lot to check it out. I then
wondered if it actually worked. Imagine my delight when I went back later
that night and saw it lit and spinning in all it's glory. I just sat there
for several minutes watching it it total amazement. By far one of the most
coolest things I've ever seen. After coming to my senses, I set up the
tripod and got a bunch of pictures and a video, which can be seen on
YouTube.
Waymark you're most proud of: I'll say the Buffalo
and Erie County Naval & Military Park (WM3XKC).
It's the largest inland
military museum in the country. There are two decommissioned ships and a
submarine to tour along with exhibits, planes, and numerous war memorials.
Most of the area can be experienced free of charge along our great
waterfront. I'm also really proud of Buffalo in general. We get a bad rap a
lot, but when people come to visit to see what we have to offer, their
opinion quickly changes.
A waymark (yours) that you'd most recommend a visit to: Niagara Falls State
Park (WM1ZHE), the oldest state park in the US. It's also listed on the NRHP
and was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. There are a bunch of other
great touristy waymarks within the park that were listed in the New York
American Guide as well. I would be glad to provide a tour to anyone who
visits (preferably in the summertime). [We may have to take you up on that, Rayman, if we ever make it up that way.]
Any featured waymarks?: Sadly I have none. [Okay Groundspeak, get to work on this. I recommend the Niagara Falls State Park
Waymark. Not many state parks that are that glorious.]
Total number of grid boxes filled (posted and visited combined): 303
Waymarking achievements: 100 waymarks posted in NRHP and NY Historical Markers, and
finding a rare Toynbee tile and even rarer functioning rotosphere.
Waymarking goals: To waymark a Disney World benchmark that hasn't been found
before and to get a bingo.
Waymarking style (gridder, specific category waymarker, both): Mostly I go
for specific categories, but occasionally I'll get obsessed with trying to
fill the grid.
How did you get started in waymarking?: I don't really remember it was so
long ago. I must have read about it in the geocaching forums and decided to
check it out. I thought it looked pretty interesting so back in August 2005
I posted my first two waymarks in the brewpubs category (
WM94 and WM96). In
fact, one of them still doesn't have a picture since it wasn't required
back then.
Who do you primarily waymark with or do you waymark alone?: Most of the time
I'm alone, but occasionally when geocaching with BarbershopDru and Andy Too
we'll grab a few waymarks together.
Do you have a dog you waymark with?: I'm not really a dog person. I have a
fluffy kitty who waits for me back home. [Okay, well, I guess I'll forgive you for being a c** person - HN]
Total states/countries you've waymarked in: 5 states plus Ontario, Canada
Country you would most like to take a way-vacation in: There are so many
places in the US that I want to see first before heading to a different
country. But if I had to pick, probably the UK.
Waymarkers that you've personally met: The Blue Quasar, MrsMcFly, PTCRAZY,
Jeremy, tiki-4, CoinsAndPins, unimoggers, and of course my hometown pals
BarbershopDru, Andy Too, and Szuchie.
Strangest or funniest thing that happened to you while waymarking: I'm
really pretty quiet and boring, so I don't have any interesting stories.
Nobody has ever questioned what I was doing, I've never injured myself or
never almost got in a car accident.
Do you have any waymarking pet peeves?: People who log one or two worded
visit logs and deadbeat leaders.
What would you like to see in Waymarking in the future?: The ability to more
easily vote out deadbeat leaders. Also, a way to have a pool of pictures
that I can use to cross-post to my own waymarks instead of uploading the
same photo 3 or 4 times.
